I currently work in construction and I am doing some personal projects and work projects that will require aptitude in web app development for our existing proprietary software and our future mobile software requirements.

That's interesting. I really believe that understanding what's happening inside the code gets us to understand the theory in general. Just how the Internet works in one area makes working with a team simpler.
